Anyone travelling through the Pilliga Scrub on the Newell Highway should keep a look out for a pair of Square-tailed Kites observed on the 2 October 1998. Good views were seen of one bird the other vanished and appeared to be carrying something (prey or nesting material). The sighting was approximately 65km from the Oxley turn-off.
