BIRDS AUSTRALIA RARITIES COMMITTEE (BARC) - August 1998 update

This column is intended to provide birding-aus readers with a regular
update of cases new, outstanding and completed. This being a note that
will hopefully be a regular monthly post to birding-aus. For those that
are interested a full account of each decision will be published as part
of the Birds Australia Report Series at a later date, it is also hoped
to have a summary published in Wingspan in the near future. Enquiries to
Tony Palliser (Chairman) or other committee members.

Other Committee members: Paul Andrew, Mike Carter, John Hatch, Bob
Patterson, Danny Rogers and Bob Swindley. Current proxy members: Dion
Hobcroft, David James, Niven McCrie and Tim Reid.

Of the cases accepted below the Savanna Nightjar (Case No.187) is the
first confirmed record for Christmas Island and therefore a new bird for
the Australian List. The Blue-winged Pitta record (Case No.241) relates
to a live bird found on the loading jetty for Woodside Petroleum, on
the Barrup Peninsula, WA 6 November 1994. As the bird was exhausted
and in an injured condition it was kept in confinement prior to being
transported to the Perth Zoo some days later. Assuming historical
records to be correct this is the fifth record of Blue-winged Pitta
claimed for Australia (including a specimen from Christmas Island 1901)
and the second to be accepted by the committee. The Blue-and-white
Flycatcher (Case No.242) is yet another new bird for Australia
involving a dead bird found on Settler?s Beach, near Cossack, WA
December 1995. The bird was reasonably fresh having been found on an
outgoing tide.
