I should note that I believe the claims of John Walmsley's Earth
Sanctuary Limited should be treated with great caution.
For example in their web site's material for potential investors, they
claim that unless commercial trade in Australian mammals is allowed,
Australia will lose over 100 species of mammal over the next 25 years.
Australia has about 270 extant terrestial mammal species. In the 200
years of european settlement, 16 mammal species are presumed extinct
from mainland Austalia. There are 30 mainland mammal species listed
federally as endangered and 16 listed as threatened.
Australia's mammal extinction rate of the last 200 years is disasterous
but Earth Sanctuary Limited is claiming that the rate will be 50x times
for the next 25 years.
For comparison, the first half of this century was bad for Australian
mammals with perhaps 9 extinctions. The second half hasn't been good
but there may have been no extinctions. ESL is claiming the next 25
years will have 4 extinctions/year - their claim is 2 years old so you
would expect 8 extinctions already.
I could discuss other claims at length but this is not about birds.
