Pat,

Just very quickly because I'm on the run ...

Elphick 1995 ("Atlas of Bird Migration": Reader's Digest, Sydney) provides
the following statistics for high fliers:

Bar-headed Goose: 9,000 m
Whooper Swan: 8,230 m
Mallard: 6,400 m
Bar-tailed Godwit: 6,000 m
White Stork: 4,800 m
Bande Lapwing: 3,900 m
Fieldfare: 3,300 m
Whistling Swan: 2,700 m
Swifts: 2,000 m
Snow Goose: 1,500 m
Chaffinch: 1,000 m
Grey Plover: 800 m

The physiology of high-altitude flying is just as interesting as that of
diving. I'm sure that some of us will be discussing this over the next few
days as time permits.

Best wishes,
Stephen
