Robert Davis wrote about some sites near Perth in Western Australia. I must
have just missed him as I did a similar trip with a visitor from Scotland
yesterday (Friday 2nd January 1998).
Lake McLarty near Pinjarra
Black-winged Stilt (2000+)
Red-necked Avocet (1250+)

Other good birds in the vicinity were Emu, White-bellied Sea-Eagle,
White-winged Triller, White-fronted Chat and Rufous Songlark. No Long-toed
Stint, Pectoral Sandpiper or Ruff or anything rarer but the water level is
still quite high and it will improve as the month goes on.

The highlight(??????) was a yobbo on a 4 wheel dune buggy flying up and down
the beach. He went under the pier, narrowly missed some people on the beach
and rolled it. They abused the @#%& out of him and were last seen riding
off on his buggy. The disturbance from the buggy was probably the reason
for the very low number of terns and gulls that usually roost on the point
in good numbers and which would normally attract jaegers. There were no
Greater Sand Plovers or knots which are usually almost certain there in summer.
