Wollongong Pelagic Trip Report 25th May 1997

Subject: Wollongong Pelagic Trip Report 25th May 1997
Date: 27 May 97 12:42:11 +1000
Trip Summary:
Another fairly quiet trip, with several visitors delighted with the views
of Yellow-nosed and Black-browed Albatross. We headed out well beyond the
shelf reaching 27nm east of Wollongong Harbour. Interestingly all of the
albatross seen were adults and many of the Yellow-nosed were in heavy wing
moult. The real highlight for me was the opportunity to photograph
Fluttering Shearwater. The biggest surprise of the trip was a Peregrine
Falcon that flew past the boat (about 5nm from shore) at high speed
heading East towards New Zealand.
Fine and cool.
Water temperature 20.0C once beyond the shelf.
Departed at 7.00 am and returned at 4.00 pm.
1.0 - 2.0 metre swell.
Winds to 15 knots mostly from the SW
Currents over the shelf heading North South
Reached approximately 27 Nautical Miles E of Wollongong.
