If I can have my two cents worth, I believe that we have two dictinct species:

Ninox boobook (Latham)1801, Southern Boobook in Australia
and
Ninox novaeseelandiae (Gmelin)1788, Morepork in NZ.

We have a resident Southern Boobook in our suburb, and I love it when he
perches in our trees and calls.
