I use a 12V 6.5Ah sealed lead-acid battery (often called a gelcell).
Dick Smith will sell you these for about $45. I bought mine somewhat
cheaper from a distributor I found in the yellow pages (can't remember
the name, sorry).
This battery will last over 2 hours with a 30watt spotlight.
I recharge it using an small Arlec car battery recharger which I bought
somewhere like BBC Hardware for $40-50. I'm not sure you are
"supposed" to use these for recharging gelcells but it works for me.
Your spotlight probably has a car cigarette lighter plug. If you call
around electronics retailers (e.g Dick Smith, Tandy, Jaycar, David
Reid) you may find someone who sells a cable with a female lighter plug
one end and something to connect to the battery terminals the other.
They'll definitely sell you the bits if you are willing to solder.
My spotlight is ancient so I'd be interested in spotlight
recommendations too.
