Hi Colleagues,

We're excited to share that we're looking to hire an acoustician to help us with ocean soundscape and noise modeling at the NMFS Southeast Fisheries Science Center.

This position will participate in a long-term passive acoustic monitoring project to understand, analyze, and reduce anthropogenic noise impacts on marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico.  The incumbent will utilize a solid foundation in ocean acoustics, signal processing, and statistical modeling to evaluate ambient noise conditions and model underwater acoustic propagation to support quantitative assessments of ocean sound sources using autonomous moored passive acoustic recorder data.  The incumbent will integrate results from theoretical acoustic propagation models based on ocean conditions, source locations, and source levels with empirical data from fourteen annually-deployed autonomous moored passive acoustic recording packages as part of a five-year acoustics research and restoration project to monitor and mitigate noise impacts on marine mammals in the northern Gulf of Mexico.  This collaborative project will improve our understanding of processes, including ocean noise, driving trends in marine mammal spatial distribution, density and abundance, including effects of projects to restore the injury to marine mammal populations from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  The research will involve collaboration with scientists at institutions including the Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Universidad Veracruzana, and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

This position will be located at the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami, FL.

Thank you,
Melissa
