And the free program Audacity also allows annotation A&S storing comments in a plain text file indexed by time.

                Syrinx (created but no more maintained by John Burt) offers the same function as Raven and I used it a lot to annotate bats recordings. You can even program keyboard shortcut or annotations which will appear on the spectrogram. Below an excerpt from the Syrinx help:

"There are two different ways of storing information in Syrinx:

1) A common log file: in the Log File menu, you can specify a text log file that receives information logged from all open windows. The information stored to the common log file can be highly variable: cursor entries, selection of a window, playback of a sound, storage of a recording buffer, keystrokes, playback events, etc. Logging to the common log file is highly configurable, and is recommended for general purpose data and playback trial logging.

You can also edit annotation entries on-screen. Although annotation files are text files, similar to common log files, they have a fixed format, and are linked with only one sound. Sound file annotation is recommended if you want to store and view persistent information about a specific sound file, and is particularly useful for working with long recordings. "

dear all, I'm searching for a software to make labels or annotations, e.g. to mark and label specific points in time or specific freqeuncy-time areas on spectrograms of wav files.

the main requirement, other that being easy to use, is to maintain the data separate from the wav file, without touching the wav file.

any suggestion ?
