Dear all,
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this query. The response was
fantastic with great suggestions, theories and ideas from everyone. The jury is
still out in regards to the identity of the animal producing this sound with
the water boatsman (Corixidae family) being the favourite so far. I am hoping
to receive some cenote survey data soon to see whether this can be confirmed
and perhaps put a species name to it.
Some extremely experienced people still have their doubts on it being a water
boatsman however, so any other ideas or suggestions are still hugely welcomed!
Again thank you to everyone for the great response,
Yours sincerely

Subject: A cicada sound...underwater?
Dear all,
During some recent recordings in cenotes around the Yucatan peninsula (Mexico)
using an omnidirectional hydrophone I picked up a sound very similar to that of
a cicada...but underwater?? At the time I could hear no cicadas in the vicinity
above the water surface.
One interesting but not very plausible possibility is that of a freshwater
invertebrate producing these sounds- is anyone aware of any that may produce
something similar to this?
Of course I do not exclude the possibility that it could also be a cicada in
contact with the water in a nearby cenote (they are connected by underground
tunnels), but the closest that I am aware of was around 200m away.
Are there any other suggestions/ideas?
Kind regards
