Dear all, During some recent recordings in cenotes around the Yucatan peninsula (Mexico) using an omnidirectional hydrophone I picked up a sound very similar to that of a cicada...but underwater?? At the time I could hear no cicadas in the vicinity above the water surface. One interesting but not very plausible possibility is that of a freshwater invertebrate producing these sounds- is anyone aware of any that may produce something similar to this? Of course I do not exclude the possibility that it could also be a cicada in contact with the water in a nearby cenote (they are connected by underground tunnels), but the closest that I am aware of was around 200m away. Are there any other suggestions/ideas? Kind regards Julius Piercy PhD Marine Biology candidate Department of Biological Sciences University of Essex Colchester, CO4 3SQ, UK
