A Ph. D. Class on Marine Bioacoustics
Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, Strömstad, Sweden
29th of May ? 8th of June, 2005
Funded by the Nordic Academy for Advanced Study (NorFA) and the
International School of Aquatic Sciences (SOAS)
This class covers basic aspects of underwater bioacoustics with emphasis on
measurement techniques. The lectures introduce animal hearing, signal
processing, sound production, echolocation, and noise effects. Technical
developments, such as acoustic telemetry, hydrophone arrays, echo-sounders,
multi-beam sonars, as well as methods for scaring and attracting wildlife
with sound, are also covered. Besides 25 lectures a major part of the
course (45 hrs) is devoted to demonstrations and practicals. The students
get hands-on experience with marine bioacoustic techniques, such as
hydrophone calibration, acoustic localization, play back and noise
measurements. Participants will prepare reports on the practicals and present
them at the end of the course.
The course is limited to 16 students and is free of charge, room and board
included. For participants with limited economic means, small grants are
available to cover travel costs.
Student from Nordic countries have preference, but any graduate students
with a relevant background are encouraged to apply.
