Subject: Anthropogenic impacts of noise on cetaceans - Straits of Gibraltar
& Alboran Sea
Date: Sun, 07 Mar 2004 19:25:54 +0000
I am currently a final year student of the BSc Honours Degree in Animal
Science doing a dissertation on "An investigation into the possible
anthropogenic impacts of noise on cetaceans inhabiting or crossing the
Straits of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea".
For my dissertation I am trying to find out the sources of marine noise
around the Straits of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea. I am trying to find out
about noises from vessel traffic as I know Gibraltar has a high volume of
boat traffic throughout the year but I am also interested in looking into
noises produced during, oil and gas exploration, industrial noises
associated with oil and gas exploration, seismic surveying, military
activity, naval activity and production and noises created by machinery,
hydrodynamic noise, propellers etc.
Since cetaceans use sound for a wide range of activities which all play
vital roles including; communication, echolocation, navigation, group
cohesion, intra and inter selection, recognition, vocalizations and
avoidance of danger etc, I am trying to look into the problems the sources
of noise in the Straits of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea will have on the
cetaceans that inhabit or cross these areas and see what the possible
solutions or mitigation measures there may be.
In short I am looking into the following areas:
* The sources of marine noise around the Straits of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea
* The effects these sources have on the cetaceans in these areas
* Possible solutions or measures
If you have any information or know of any contacts in the Straits of
Gibraltar and Alboran Sea region I would be extremely grateful for the
assistance.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your time,
Many, many thanks; it is very much appreciated,
Charlotte Smith
