Two research positions in bioacoustics (Research Fellow and Senior Research
Fellow) are being offered by Disney's Animal Kingdom:

Research Fellow - Elephant Vocal Communication

Position Description: Assist in the operation of the Elephant Communication
and Behavior program. The successful candidate will be trained in
acoustical methods and behavior analyses as needed, and support research on
infrasonic vocal communication and related social behavior in African
 elephants.

Project Description: Researchers in the Wildlife Tracking Center at
Disney's Animal Kingdom are conducting a long-term project investigating
the vocal communication system of the African elephant, and are
participating in a program funded by the National Science Foundation to
apply human speech recognition techniques to the study of animal
vocalizations. Elephants in the collection are fitted with customized
collars used to record vocalizations and location (GPS). Simultaneously,
behavioral data are collected on video. Vocalization and behavioral data
are then analyzed at our bio-acoustics / audio-visual laboratory, and
combined to determine the behavioral context of vocalizations, factors
influencing vocalization structure, type and rate, and the overall
relationship between vocalizations and social behavior.

 Major Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in data collection and data processing
Analyzes vocalization and behavioral data according to established
 methodologies
Works in close association with other members of the Elephant Communication
Team and shares information freely with team members

Staffs the Wildlife Tracking Center, which is in view of park guests, and
actively participates in the Guest Experiences as assigned

Assists in the development of interactive, interpretive experiences with
guests in partnership with the scientific and education staff.

Term: This is a one-year appointment beginning September 2004 with
potential renewal for one additional year depending on performance.

 Qualifications
 * B.S./B.A. in animal behavior or related field
 * Strong analytical skills
 * Previous involvement in research on animal social behavior
 * Excellent written and oral communication skills for both formal and
 informal audiences
 * Ability to work with others in a fast paced, team oriented atmosphere
