recorders. Although the microphone preamp on the Sonifex "Courier" is quite
good, it's usually best to use a separate microphone preamp with any DAT or
digital recorder and then record into the line input of the device. This
doesn't mean that the entire system needs to be "significantly more
expensive" as you suggest the HHB, Sony, etc. devices would be. For
example, you could use a Grace Design "Lunatec V3" dual channel portable
preamp. The preamp has a bandwidth of approximately 250kHz and at only
$1700 is much less expensive than comparable scientific preamps. They also
make a single channel preamp for less than $1k.
