Project Description
Researchers in the Wildlife Tracking Center at Disney's Animal Kingdom
are conducting a long term project investigating the vocal
communication system of the African elephant. Elephants are fitted
with customized collars to allow the recording of infrasonic
vocalizations. Simultaneously, behavioral data are collected with
specific attention to social interactions. Vocalization data and
behavioral data are then combined and analyzed to determine the
behavioral context of vocalizations, factors influencing vocalization
rate and category and the relationship between vocalizations and
social behavior.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
* Assists in design and data collection for all studies
* Works in close association with other members of the Elephant
Communication team and shares information freely with team members.
* Participates in training staff members as needed
* Staffs the Wildlife Tracking Center and actively participates
sharing scientific information with our visitors
* Assists in the development of interactive, interpretive
experiences in partnership with the scientific and education
staff
* Communicates research results in staff seminars, scientific
journals, conference presentations, and popular publications
Qualifications
* Ph.D. with experience in animal communication studies
* Strong experimental design and analytical skills
* Experience with SIGNAL software and acoustical analysis
* Experience with Observer analysis software and video analysis
* Experience using standard statistical software packages (i.e. SPSS)
* Excellent written and oral communication skills for both
formal and informal audiences
* Ability to work with others in a fast paced, team oriented atmosphere
