Some email systems let you set up an automatic response for your email when
you travel. Typically these systems are used to reply to any incoming
email with a message saying something like "I'm out of the office until
 next week."

It appears that many Bioacoustics-L subscribers are using these response
systems, with the result that anyone who posts a message to Bioacoustics-L
now receives a sizable glut of automatic responses. (It's worst around
Christmas, but it's bad enough right now.) Unfortunately there doesn't
appear to be any automatic way to prevent these responses for
Bioacoustics-L postings. So I'm asking you to do it manually: if you use
such an automatic response system, please put your Bioacoustics-L
 subscription on hold before leaving.

To put your subscription on hold, simply send the message

         set Bioacoustics-L mail postpone

to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . When you return and have disabled your automatic
 response system, send the message

         set Bioacoustics-L mail ack

(or "set Bioacoustics-L mail digest" if you prefer daily digests) to the
same address. You'll then receive a compendium of Bioacoustics-L messages
posted since you sent the "postpone" message.

 Thank you,
 Dave Mellinger, list manager
