G’day I have flushed a single buttonquail on three occasions in recent days while walking the dog through an echidna/koala-hosting grassy woodland/forest on the lower slopes of a large hill in greater Brisbane. The native grasses are generally knee high clumps and medium density. The flushing distance for the bird typically around 5 metres. It flies about 20 to 30 metres at a height of two metres in a straight line with very little wing noise. There are no contact or alarm calls. I am thinking it is probably a Painted BQ, but am not sure if the behaviour is typical of the species.
