Wood Duck behaviour

I have found AWD eggs in many settings. The explanation is that the bird has been startled When heading towards the nest and when “yah gotta go, yah gotta go!’

We have a pair of Wood Ducks that periodically visit our back yard swimming pool.  In addition to the expected the physical reminders of their visits, we also get the occasional egg left on the side of the pool. 

My understanding is that Wood Ducks normally nest in tree hollows.  Why would they lay an egg in the hostile environment of the concrete surrounds of a swimming pool?
