Dear Chris,
In Australia I have only seen at most 2-3 in one outing. In Canada I
believe I have seen 6. But there are certainly a few massive reports in
Australia. For example:

Reports 500 on July 1, 1999. Nearby 250 were reported two years later.
140 were reported in 2005 at Bool Lagoon in South Australia. 100 were
reported in 2008 at the Cairns Esplanade.
So it is definitely possible, and these are just some samples from ten
records I queried on the eBird database. It might be interesting to use
these unusually large numbers of Egrets and other waterbirds and
correlated this data with drought conditions around Australia also.
