Hi Gary,

I don’t know if anyone else has responded but when we observe a bird or other animal at or near to a carcase on the road it is easy to presume that the bird is feeding on the carcase.  Often it is the insects that are devouring the carcase that are the focus of the scavenger’s attention.

Driving between Wilmington and Melrose  SA yesterday I observed a white faced heron standing next to a  kangaroo carcass.  I did not see the heron eating the carcass but that was the distinct impression formed as to why it was standing there.  It did not strike me as haphazard or coincidental behaviour.

We are in the middle of a drought situation where things are incredibly dry.
