Field guide dragonflies

The guide that Stephen recommends is the only one available - I find it a little frustrating compared to bird (and even the butterfly field guide) - many species only have photos of males (and don't even discuss the female characteristics).

I haven't seen that key before - however I have used this one (http://rnr.id.au/cgi-bin/species/odonata) and have found it quite useful if you have photos (at least gives a starting point). Apparently isn't great for northern Australia but I have found it good for around Albury, Sydney and Brisbane.

There is a FaceBook group as well but doesn't get many responses (though there are one or two that are good at IDs).

I have found the following book useful for identifying Australian dragonflies:

Theischinger, G & Hawking, J. (2006). The Complete Field Guide to Dragonflies of Australia. 366 pp. (CSIRO Publishing, Collingwood). https://www.publish.csiro.au/book/5349/ .

 

There is also an online identification key and photos of Australian damselfly and dragonfly species http://photos.rnr.id.au/Data/Animals/Insects/Odonata/ but I’ve never used it, so I don’t know how useful it is.
