People do keep them in aviaries, and sometimes they escape.  I have been asked over the phone, 3 or 4 times, over the last forty years, to identify a "bird shaped like a football, with stripes on its sides."   They all turned out to be Chukar.

I was contacted by someone today with an unusual bird in his yard, somewhere around Bacchus Marsh. Long story short, he sent me 3 very beautiful clear photos which identified it as a Chukar partridge. I see there was once a release of these birds around Gulgong NSW but they aren’t believed to have established a population, so I presume this is an aviary escapee? Are there any records of it elsewhere in Victoria?

Cheers,
