“Changing the game: providing new hope for Australia’s threatened wildlife”
Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) represents an exciting new model for conservation in Australia –
one that is offering hope for our threatened wildlife. Across 5 million hectares, AWC’s dedicated team of scientists and land managers are implementing ecologically-friendly fire management and feral animal control, as well as undertaking Australia’s most
extensive program of biological surveys. The outcomes for conservation are very exciting and are demonstrating that it is possible to halt
and reverse the decline of Australia’s natural capital.
Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary on the southern edge of the Tanami Desert, is one of 27 properties around
Australia that AWC manages for conservation. Newhaven is renowned as a key arid zone birdwatching destination. Supporting over 165 species of birds, the property was originally purchased by Birdlife Australia before being transferred to AWC in 2006. Here AWC
is undertaking the largest rewilding project of its kind on the planet and restoring the region to the way it was when the first explorers traversed this remote part of central Australia. In fact, this landmark project is set to double the population of 10%
of Australia’s threatened mammal species.
Leah will deliver a presentation on how AWC’s award winning approach is transforming conservation on the ground and
securing the future of Australia’s threatened wildlife at Newhaven as well as across AWC’s network of sanctuaries.
