Here in the Vinegar Hill area (~30km E of Toowoomba, Queensland) they have
turned up between 17 and 21 September almost every year for the 20 years we
have kept records.
This year we heard the first call on 9 September and then nothing until the
29th.
Could the difference be the very low rainfall over the past two years? Maybe
they are keeping on going without stopping here.
This year we had only 88mm from the end of March to the end of September.
Thousands of mature stringy-bark eucalypts along the ridges (shallow soils?)
are completely brown (unclear yet whether they are dead) as are acacias and
some ironbarks. The ridge tops are obvious in the view as lines of brown
across the landscape. These aren’t young trees, but decades old mature trees,
many in the National Park on our boundary.
