This month’s speaker will be Kate Gorringe-Smith who will talk about
“The Overwintering Project: citizen science meets citizen art”.
The Overwintering Project is an environmental art project designed to raise
awareness for migratory shorebirds and the habitat in Australia and New Zealand
on which they rely. Due to advances largely in tracking technology, the last
decade has shown amazing advances in knowledge about migratory shorebirds - the
routes they fly on their migrations and the habitat they rely on throughout the
East Asian-Australasian Flyway. These birds spend the greatest portion of their
migratory cycles (October to May) on the shores of Australia and New Zealand -
their non-breeding or overwintering habitat - which gives us a particular duty
of care to preserve their habitat. The Overwintering Project invites artists
around Australia and New Zealand to visit, and make a work or art in response
to, their local migratory shorebird habitat. The project’s intention is to
engage new audiences with these amazing birds and their habitat.
Kate Gorringe-Smith, the project’s instigator and co-ordinator, will talk about
ways in which the project can engage new audiences with migratory shorebirds,
and how art can be a powerful tool for conservation.
