Most of my NZ birding has been on south island so I’m struggling a bit for
north island spots I can personally recommend.

As Bill said, Tiritiri Matangi is a good spot, a short boat ride from Auckland.
A bit of an island retreat for some of NZ’s scarce woodland birds. Not sure how
tick-able they are if that bothers you, many originate from re-introductions /
translocations from the mainland. If that doesn’t bother you then Sanctuary
Mountain south of Cambridge is probably an easy trip from Hamilton as another
alternative. I’ve been to Tiritiri but not Sanctuary Mountain.

The Miranda Shorebird Centre is another must do. Checking the website there are
good numbers of Wrybills there already which makes it worth the trip alone.

I have the last edition of the Stuart Chambers Birds of New Zealand Locality
Guide (2009) you are welcome to have a loan of it if you can arrange pick up.

Hope that helps

Mike
