Hi birders,

Unfortunately we have to go through all this again down here in Victoria.
Another season of duck shooting starts on March 17th. Birdlife is
encouraging citizen scientists to get out amongst the Victorian wetlands and
survey for threatened species, namely Freckled Duck, Blue-billed Duck,
Bitterns, Brolgas and significant numbers of Australasian Shoveler (which is
not on the game list this year). Reporting of such birds can sometimes help
to get wetlands closed to shooting, and shows the authorities that there are
plenty of eyes out there watching what is going on.

Bird lists entered into BIRDATA will be picked up and acted upon should
there be a case for reporting significant bird numbers. Additionally
reporting sightings to the local DELWP office, or Birdlife head office
directly should alert the right people.

Last year concerns regarding one wetland in northern Victoria were ignored,
and the resulting carnage was on the national news.

Until this so called sport is banned, at least this is something practical
we can do to help some of our rarer birds

Cheers

Simon Starr
