Some of your good spots to visit at that time of year (in your rather broad
itinerary!) would be:
Eastern South Africa - Wakkerstroom, St Lucia, Ongoye & Dlinza Forest,
Amatikulu & Mtunzini (Umlalalzi), and perhaps Oribi Gorge, although that is
better in summer. For these forests I'd highly recommend using the local
guides - see http://www.birdlife.org.za/gobirding/community-bird-guides
Southern South Africa - Strandfontein, Harold Porter Gardens, Betty's Bay
penguin colony and Rooiels (Cape Town area), Paarl Mountain Reserve,
Wilderness, Addo Elephant Park (inc Alexandra Forest section)
Kruger - wildlife is very good in central Kruger, with a higher
concentration of predators in the grasslands. Birding is a little sparser in
winter, but several grassland species can still be found, and the riverine
woodland hold plenty of species. Southern Kruger is good for Wild Dog and
Cheetah, but very touristy (busy), being in closer proximity to Nelspruit.
Furthern north the plains around Shingwedzi are productive - Punda Maria to
Pafuri is the birding mecca of the park, and in spite of being far north, it
is well worth staying at Punda Maria for 2 or 3 nights.
Near Pretoria, Roodeplaat Nature Reserve is productive, further out you can
get to Borakalalo Game Reserve near Brits. Marievale is east of
Johannesburg, and hosts several waterfowl, even in winter.

My wife and I are travelling to South Africa at the end of June this year
for the first time.
I'd appreciate any advice on birding hotspots, guides and accommodation for
east and southern parts of South Africa.
In particular, within Kruger NP, Pretoria and the Garden Coast from Capetown
and Port Elizabeth.
