Hi everyone,
Yes it is a fascinating discovery that is still unfolding. 15 birds have been
seen at the site today (14/12).
There has been a little bit of confusion though about the location of an active
Little Tern nesting colony that is at the site. To simplify things, NSW NPWS
(who actively manage the Little Tern colony; an endangered species in NSW) have
requested that people access the Aleutian Terns by walking along the main
beach, keeping the fenced area to your left as you go. Then once the fence runs
out, cut back into the estuary and the Aleutians will be somewhere on the
sandflats (assuming you're there at the right tide).

Note that the aerial photo is an old one and it doesn't depict the fact that
the estuary is currently closed to the sea.

Subject: [Birding-Aus] Aleutian Terns at Old Bar, NSW
13 there this afternoon Dec 13 on a rising tide, we stayed from 1430-1600 and
got great views, many thanks to Liam the finder who put the word out, and also
found the very first here last year it seems! I suspect this may have been much
overlooked as hardly anyone knows what they look like in winter, I was
pleasantly surprised at how different they were, with the slender bill, short
dark olive legs, dark trailing edge to the secondaries and very white face with
white over the eye and almost a white eyebrow ridge. A great tick!
