Hi Jonny,

nice to hear from you on here...

yes Glenn is definitely missed that's for sure.

it's interesting to hear that is how Glenn replied to that question because
that's exactly how I answer people when they ask the same of me - although my
reply at the moment with the current taxonomy would be all but 5 or 6 Aussie
breeders (including Tasmania as part of the 'mainland' of course!!)...

my main passion is of OUR Ausssie breeding birds and the regular migrants that
breed elsewhere, not that I mind seeing the extreme vagrants if they are nearby
at the time.

Hello all,

has anyone counted the number of bird species endemic to Australia that breed,
or are known to have bred at some time, on the mainland?

I intend to compare the threats to the endemic mainland breeder Grey Falcon
with the threats faced by other endemic mainland breeders, and will be very
grateful for the information. The taxonomy followed plays a role of course, but
all is good as long as it is known.

Many years ago I asked the late Glenn Holmes how many bird species he had seen
in Australia. His reply surprised me at the time, but I since adopted Glen’s
approach. He replied that he had seen all but 2 or 3 (if I remember correctly)
mainland breeders. Glenn is surely sadly missed.

Cheers,
Jonny
