I used Birds of Sri Lanka by John Harrison (illus Tim Worfolk).  Light and
quite acceptable.  A minor nuisance is that the images are not adjacent to
the text.

Pocket guide to the Birds of Indian Subcontinent by Grimmett and Inskipp x
2 was also helpful and covers the larger area (and has images with the text.
