RE Lyn Saint's request: Hi Lyn, A worthwhile site for potential Gibber Birds and Cinnamon Quail Thrushes is the Hutchison Monument about 11km south of Coober Pedy, on the eastern side of the road. Pull in there, and explore downhill to the east. Alice Springs is quite dry ATM (no rain since mid-January), so the bush birds are not so plentiful/obvious. Nevertheless, try the road from Alice Springs to Santa Teresa. The first 40km has a variety of habitats - the first 14km beyond the airport roundabout is bitumen, thereafter unsealed (may be rough, but you would not need 4WD or high clearance unless it rains in the few days before you travel).
