Some Birding-aussers may be interested in this news from Alma de Rebeira about a recent bushfire event near the Eyre Bird Observatory in Western Australia (see below). Kind regards Stephen Stephen Ambrose Ryde NSW Dear Friends of Eyre, During December there were fires, started by lightning, along the Eyre Highway. At first fires were contained above the escarpment but later burnt through the Nuytsland Nature reserve coming close to Eyre. The Dept. of Parks and Wildlife evacuated the caretakers and placed a fire crew at the observatory and closed all roads and tracks. Thanks to DPaW crews Eyre is untouched. Vegetation was badly burnt with a hot fire above the escarpment where the caretakers lost their parked car. There are patches of unburnt country on the way to the observatory. As a result of this, Eyre's Management committee has closed the observatory for the time being to allow our Caretakers to undertake base line surveys in both the burnt areas and the unburnt pockets . We expect to re-open to 4WD only after 15th January. As there is little vegetation around the Lookout area there is no suitable place to leave vehicles for 2wd guests. Further information will be provided in the next Eyre Waves due at end of this month. Kind regards Alma Alma de Rebeira OAM Chair of Management Committee Eyre Bird Observatory email: Attachment:
