As a member of the Birdlife Great Western Woodlands (GWW) project I have led
bird surveys through the range and the surrounding conservation park. The GWW
is a largely intact woodland of immense size. It forms a refuge for many
species of birds now rare or locally extinct elsewhere. The Helena & Aurora
Range is an especially valuable part of this ecosphere.
An earlier proposal to mine this range (Yes - to turn it into an open pit
mine!) was rejected by the EPA. This decision was overturned by the minister
and a re-submission of the mining proposal is currently before the EPA.
See what the range is all about at https://youtu.be/RUpIcxeqLIA produced by an
organisation dedicated to preserving the range.
