For those people looking for a family friendly birding location in FNQ, give
Etty Bay some consideration(I'm sure this isn't news to many people). With two
small children, that I'm looking to get interested in natural history, I'm
always keen to find out about places where wildlife is accessible and
relatively easy to see...The Cassowaries were a daily occurrence seeing at
least five different individuals with only one appearing habituated..if a
Cassowary can be. Lots of Rainbow Bee-eaters, 3 species of Woodswallows,
several easy to see Fruit Dove species, both Stone Curlew species within a
hundred metres of each other and Forest Kingfishers a constant presence. All
flashy species that children and causal birders can't help be interested in. At
night Squirrel Gliders from the balcony and Fireflies in the driveway. More
hardcore birding can be easily found nearby is you want to get away to look for
some of the other specialities.
