Please note the following schedule of works and minor impacts on access to Western Treatment Plant over the coming weeks. Kind regards Russell Woodford From: Sent: Friday, 27 May 2016 3:53 PM To: birdwatching Subject: Works at WTP and impacts on Birdwatchers Good afternoon, Melbourne Water will undertake the following works in WTP over the coming weeks, which will impact access to birdwatching at various locations across the site. We apologise for any inconvenience caused: 1. Kirks Point Restoration Project Melbourne Water is currently undertaking works at the Kirks Point Boat Ramp facility. These works will improve both the public amenity and the health of the coastal saltmarsh. The works will include constructing a carpark and saltmarsh protection barriers, improving fencing and the access track. DATES: 30th May to 30th June 2016. IMPACT TO BIRDWATCHERS: No impacts to access within the gated areas, this is primarily for your information. Access into the publically accessible coastal reserve south of Beach Road will be closed from 30th May to 30th June 2016. 2. Little River Fish way improvement works: The ford crossing on the estuary of Little River within the Western Treatment Plant is currently limiting fish migration. The culverts within the ford crossing will be replaced to improve fish passage. Construction works will take place over a 2 week period from 20th June to - 1st July 2016. For safety reasons, the ford will be closed to all traffic during the construction period. DATES: 20th June to 1st July 2016. IMPACT TO BIRDWATCHERS: Gate No. 8 will be closed and there will be no access to the "special bird" access areas during this period. 3. Paradise Road access works: Melbourne Water will be installing a structure at Gate 5 (Paradise Road entry), which will be used in the future to improve access to the bird watching area. As a result of this, access to Gate 5 will be closed for 3 days from Monday the 6th of June to Wednesday the 8th of June 2016. Please note: Once installed this structure will not affect bird watching access - your keys will work as per usual. DATES: 6th June to 8st June 2016. IMPACT TO BIRDWATCHERS: Gate No. 5 will be closed during this period. During this period please access the general and special access bird watching areas through Gate 4 off Beach Road. 4. Update: Western Lagoons Saltmarsh Restoration Project During April, Melbourne Water undertook significant works at the Western Lagoons to convert retired treatment ponds into saltmarsh. Accumulated soil and freshwater vegetation that had accumulated in the bottom of ponds 6 and 7 were stripped and removed from the site. Segments of the southern embankment were opened to allow tidal waters to enter. The final pond floor elevations were set to promote the colonisation of the ponds by saltmarsh preferred by the Orange Bellied Parrot. Minor works will continue to occur through to the end of May. The site will be open to the bird watching community by 1 June 2016. For more information on these projects please call 131 722 quoting "Little River Ford Crossing" or "Kirks Point Restoration Project" or "Western Lagoons Saltmarsh Restoration Project".
