Not sure that is true, although it has been a while since I read it. More to 
the point, he was competing with someone else that year, who actually 
out-listed him. So the change was in the midst of a fierce competition. He has 
not tried again, even though he is by all reckoning one of the best field 
birders in the country, as well as an ardent conservationist.
