In response to Michael Norris' request for a scientific view and reference material on miner impacts there is indeed some assessments on this from an ecological perspective. The federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act and Victoria's Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act have Noisy Miners included in there schedules as 'threatening processes'. I can provide copies of the scientific assessments from each jurisdiction for those interested. Here in Victoria La Trobe University has undertaken a suite of studies on miner species, especially the Noisy Miner in north east Victoria. Some of this work has involved assessing the outcomes of miner removal on small insectivorous from woodland remnants. The affect of miner removal has been shown to last years in some cases (see references below), depending on the numbers of birds removed and over what area. I can recommend the following papers for those who wish to find out more. The first one is easily accessible via the internet. Grey, M. & Clarke, M. (2011) The Noisy Miner: Challenges in managing an overabundant species. La Trobe University, Bundoora. (internet document) Debus, S.J.S. (2008) The effect of noisy miners on small bush birds: an unofficial cull and its outcome. Pacific Conservation Biology 14: 185-190. Grey, M.J., Clarke, M.F. & Loyn, R.H. (1997) Initial changes in the avian communities of remnant eucalypt woodlands following a reduction in the abundance of Noisy Miners, Manorina melanocephala. Wildlife Research 24: 631-648. cheers, Martin Martin O'Brien | Executive Officer Flora and Fauna Guarantee Scientific Advisory Committee | Environment and Climate Change Division Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning 8 Nicholson St, East Melbourne, Victoria 3002 www.delwp.vic.gov.au Attachment:
