Hi Martin,
Well that is a first. They are same genus as the House Sparrow, the type
genus of the order passeriformes. So of course with a capital S and no
hyphen. It is not like "Cuckoo-shrike". It should be Tree Sparrow or (at a
stretch but not needed in Australia) Eurasian Tree Sparrow if you are
concerned to avoid any confusion with the American Tree Sparrow species of a
different family.
Look up the internet on Tree Sparrow and you get huge confusion with other
species and you get photos of all kinds of other birds for comparison
including for example martins, bluebirds and kestrels!
In many times passing through there, I have never seen Tree Sparrows in that
area. As I studied the species for my thesis many years ago I still think I
can pick them at 80 metres........ There are some around Albury and that is
about the closest likely to our area. They are clearly nowhere near as good
as spreading along human corridors as the House Sparrow is. I recommend,
although it would cost a bit more but if you want to see the Tree Sparrow,
go to Melbourne or better still lots of cities in Asia (well most of the few
that I have been to), where they are probably the most common bird.

I am going birding in Young NSW in a few days and in preparing for the trip
have noticed Eurasian Tree-sparrow appears on lists from both eBird and
BLA. I would be interested in keeping an eye open for this species, but
note that the eBird record dates from 1975! Has anyone seen the Tree
Sparrows in the Yung area more recently than that (say the last 5 years)?
