Dave,
Ridgley is great for Ecuador and I certainly carted it around - but the sheer
biodiversity of the place has a downside! i.e. the book is mighty heavy!
Some on my trip went so far as cutting out the colour plates and id keys and
just carrying them.
And that's just the Field Guide - there is an accompanying volume of equal size
and weight on Status, Distribution and Taxonomy.

While not comparable if you want to study what you see in depth, there is a
much smaller (and cheaper) guide which is worth a look.

"Fieldbook of the Birds of Ecuador" Miles McMullan and Lelis Navarrete 2013
(carry that in the field, make notes and research the weightier volumes when
back at camp?)

Best Regards, good birding and get ready for "sensory overload"!
