Intermediate Egret

Hi Stephan,

Intermediate Egret is one of the more difficult birds in Victoria. When Ruth
and I did our Victorian Big Year in 2010, we were lucky enough to encounter
two or three birds - but the conditions were incredibly strange - the first
half of the year was in the worst drought ever recorded in Victoria, and for
the second half, much of the state was flooded - go figure. At that time, I
had spoken with quite a few very experienced birders (with decades of
birding experience) that had never seen an Intermediate Egret in Victoria.

Your best bet is to simply watch the Birdlines and hope that someone sees
and reports one.

If you want to go looking for yourself, statistically the north of the state
has the greater likelihood of an encounter. I must admit that I'm not
particularly sure what time of year is best, but I have a suspicion that
summer may be better.

Good luck!
