Dear readers

Early in the Swift season a few large flocks of FTS were reported in the N.T. While few birds have been reported from W.A. and almost none from SA. These three states used to be their stronghold - if birders were there to see them.

In addition this year quite a few are being reported in S.E. Asia on eBird and so I was wondering if a larger segment of the population than normal had not come down to Australia.

BUT at last large flocks are being seen in SE Qld. If you are in the area you might be rewarded if you keep your eyes open over the next week or so.

Chris Barnes saw 1,600 at Port Bundaberg on the 28th, and some stayed around the area the following day or so. On the same day Trevor Ford saw 1,000 at Warra, Nth of Dalby, then on the 29th he saw 2,000 16 km NE of Dalby. Michael Strong also saw 500 out Toowoomba way earlier in the week.

So thank you Qld for feeding our hungry migrants.

Cheers & Happy swift watching

Mike
