Hi Jason, Here's a suggestion that I reckon will help you immensely. Invest in these two books, which provide lots of extremely helpful information about specific birding locations all over the continent. Both can be purchased via Google - best through CSIRO: Finding Australian Birds by Dolby and Clarke, and (and do get both!) Complete Guide to Finding the Birds of Australia by Thomas and Thomas. You'll never look back!
