Nothing to crow about
The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources
(DEDJTR) is calling on all bird watchers to be on the lookout for a single
House Crow that has been sighted in the City and South Bank area.
The House Crow (Corvus splendens) is a highly destructive bird species
originating from Asia and is classified as a prohibited pest in Victoria
and banned Nationally.
Biosecurity Manager Adam Kay said: “We are urging people who have seen a
House Crow to report sightings, dates and locations by calling 136 186 or
by email ”
“This species has been seen near Flinders Street Station, the Shrine of
Remembrance and around Southbank in the last few months.
“House Crows have a black bill, black eyes and pale grey, non-glossy toned
feathers on the nape, neck and lower breast.
“Their wings and head have metallic-greenish, glossy plumage with
blue-purple sheen on the forehead, crown, throat, back, wings and tail.
“House Crows are smaller and more slender than other similar Australian
native birds, such as the Australian Raven, Little Raven, Forest Raven and
Little Crow.
“Overseas they are a major pest for the agriculture and horticulture
industries causing severe damage to crops.
“House Crows have not established in Australia, however they have a
history as stowaways on cargo ships, including those occasionally
travelling to Australia.
“Early detection of House Crows is critical to preventing the
establishment of this species in the wild in Australia.”
