Hi All
Chris Baxter here-I have been subscribing to Birds-Aus forum for quite a
number of years now-mostly reading and not so much for posting. I have
posted a few bits of info about KI birds. I have lived on KI for much of my
60 years- I grew up on a Soldier Settlement farm on far SW KI-on doorstep of
Flinders Chase NP. I became seriously interested in birds (both feathered
and mini-skirted ones!) when I was about 18 and ornithology has been a
tremendously enjoyable/rewarding hobby for me ever since. Most of my bird
watching has been centred on birds of KI but I did spend 15 years on
mainland-mostly in Desert Parks of SA as I was a ranger with SA NP&W for 35
years. You may remember me as the person who discovered Antarctic Terns at
Cape du Couedic in Flinders Chase NP about eight years ago (from memory). I
have written quite a number of scientific papers for SA Ornithologist and
wrote/produced an Annotated List of the Birds Of KI back in 1985/revised
1995 which was a booklet of about 90 pages. Anyway, to the point.
I have recently completed writing text for A Field Guide to the Birds of
Kangaroo Island. This book is laid out with text on left page and colour
photographs on facing page. It deals with about 265 species from memory. It
has taken about two years to write text as it was mostly done whenever a bit
of free time became available. I presently work as a wildlife tour guide on
KI. I am writing to request/beg for colour bird photos for my bird book. We
(editorial/publishing team) have assembled quite a good selection of
photographs from our friends and bird watching colleagues but there remains
quite a lot of gaps that we need to fill. The Layout and Design team has
sent me a master list of pics that we need to get/improve upon and I must
confess it sent me into a bit of a spin as there seems to be a lot more gaps
than I thought there would be. If any person out there is keen to have their
photos-fully acknowledged of course-in what we believe will be a quality
publication-then we would be most thrilled and grateful to have you on board
as part of our team. I am only too keen to forward our master list of pics
needed to anyone who is keen to contribute and possibly have their photo/s
showcased in our field guide. I am also only too keen to forward parts of
the text to anyone so that they can see what they are becoming involved with
re: text content/quality. On that score, if there are any seabird/shorebird
enthusiasts/specialists out there that I could send that part of my text to
in order for it to be read and checked for accuracy etc. please let me know
and I will forward text to you and look forward to your feedback I am fully
aware that it is too late for correcting unnecessary/disappointing mistakes
once book is printed.
I look forward to hearing from anyone willing to come on board and will be
only too keen to forward Missing Photos List or pertinent parts of text
onto anyone who is interested to contribute photos and/or proof reading of
seabird/shorebirds part of text. I am only too keen to send/post USB
sticks to anyone who wants to download their photos and send them to me.
Any help will be fully acknowledged and much appreciated.
Yours Sincerely
Chris Baxter
