I appreciate your feedback and feelings.

I read over the Australian birdwatching ethics reference you were kind enough
to include - unless I misread it, they encourage restraint in using tape
playback, but do not specifcally prohibit same.
Particularly in groups, it is frequently much less disruptive to use song
playback as opposed to multiple persons crashing through what may be very
sensitive habitat.

I make a point of contributing to all the conservation groups, and what little
disturbance I make should be greatly offset by the dollars I send to help
preserve natural areas.

One mans opinion

Cannot believe this stirred up such a firestorm???
Thought you Aussies were a bit more friendly to visitors

By the way, I have traveled in the past with tour groups (I was not the leader)
using Pygmy Owl tapes in S and Central America, and Pearl-spotted Owlet in
Africa to induce mobbing behavior. Not really much difference in using this
technique and pishing when you think about it

Hi Terry,

You will find that you don’t need to do that to see birds here. True, some
species are shy and more difficult to see, but patience, good field craft and
perhaps the help of a local guide will get you onto the bird. There are a lot
of keen and knowledgeable birders around Adelaide.

The concept of using playback to induce mob behaviour is stressful to birds.
Perhaps not up there with hunting, trapping and habitat destruction, but
distressing nonetheless. It conflicts completely with accepted bird watching
ethics in Australia.

Sorry to be critical of a technique that you probably think is an accepted part
of bird watching, but I urge you to think of the welfare of the birds and put
that in front of your need to take a shortcut to get a good view. Hope you have
a good time in South Australia and see lots of birds.

Regards

Birds can be easy to see, plus many individuals that are silent and would never
be noticed may come to the tape as well. It works best with feeding flocks.

I will be spending a month in S Australia Nov/Dec this year. In the US,
tape of E Screech-Owl can be very effective in attracting a variety of small
birds
(at least in the East). Is there a similar species in S Oz that
causes mobbing behavior??

Cheers
