G'day B-Ausers
If any of you are still trying to see WTNT before the year ends, (as
they have been scarce this season in Sth NSW & Vic) then here is a
clue. Seven of the eight late afternoons that I have been there
(since 15th Dec) I have seen them. However, all but two birds were
seen only through the binoculars, - they were so high. I estimate
they were mostly between 400 & 900m up.
The place: Bunyip Forest, at the Helipad, on Helmut Track.
Time: If not raining - between 7 pm & 9 pm. If it looks like
raining get there 2-3 hours earlier, they dissappeared after the rain.
They are feeding on insects much of the time, but sometimes are just
passing through.
They behave like this, sometimes at the Thurra River Rest area, East
Gippsland and at Pine Avenue, Badgers Creek (all in Vic) . Other
places they feed at low altitudes and are visible without bins, but
are not there nearly as often.
Happy hunting
Mike Tarburton.
