Birdline North Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 11 May 2014.

Sun 11 May Southern Boobook Sanamere Wetlands just north of Jardine River Ferry Northern Peninsular Area Cape York
This bird has only been recorded on Eremaea north of the Jardine 3 times over 20 years (once dead and once heard only). In small trees in heath and wetlands approx. 4km north of ferry crossing. Came in to playback. I managed to get within 2m twice for lengthy views as it made it's distinctive calls to confirm race ocellata.

Grey Goshawk Tyto Wetlands
Grey Goshawk near Osprey nest tree in Tyto Wetlands today. Bird moved three times without drawing harassment from other birds. Very different story when Brown Goshawks are in the wetlands. Also today, two immature Black-faced Monarchs, first sighting of species for months.

Wed 7 May Australasian Gannet Green Island, Great Barrier Reef
A juvenile observed twice within 10 minutes, sometimes flying at eye height within 10 meters from me. Brown and white gannet with white rump, brown tail, brown top coverts with lots of white spots. Under-wing pattern white with brown leading and trailing edges and a few other brown marks. Head and neck patchy greyish/brown and white. Dark bill.
